Message from the Sickle Cell Association of Savannah, Inc:
World Sickle Cell Day
June 19, 2024

June 19th was officially designated as World Sickle Cell Awareness Day in 2008. The international awareness day is observed annually with the goal to increase public knowledge and an understanding of sickle cell disease, and the challenges experienced by patients and their families and caregivers.

“Shine the Light” is a national awareness campaign to celebrate World Sickle Cell Day. We invite you to join with friends, family, neighbors and others in your community, as people around the nation and across the globe show their support to shine the light on sickle cell disease. Together, we must and will find a universal cure for sickle cell disease!

THE SICKLE CELL ASSOCIATION OF SAVANNAH, INCORPORATED IS  A NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION DEDICATED TO PROMOTING AWARENESS, ADVOCATING HEALTHCARE, AND PROVIDING SUPPORTIVE SERVICES TO PERSONS AND FAMILIES LIVING WITH SICKLE CELL ANEMIA.

SICKLE CELL ANEMIA IS A GENETIC DISEASE AFFECTING THE HEMOGLOBIN—THE OXYGEN CARRYING COMPONENT OF THE RED BLOOD CELLS.

THE NATION TAKES A PAUSE AT LEAST TWICE A YEAR TO RECOGNIZE SICKLE CELL DISEASE. JUNE 19TH IS WORLD SICKLE CELL DAY AND SEPTEMBER IS SICKLE CELL AWARENESS MONTH.  HOWEVER, CHILDREN, ADULTS, AND FAMILIES AFFECTED BY SICKLE CELL, LIVE THE CHALLENGES AND TRIUMPHS OF THE DISEASE EVERYDAY.  HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS MUST BE PREPARED AND EQUIPPED TO PROVIDE THE MEDICAL TREATMENT FOR THE SICKLE PATIENTS WHO COME IN THEIR CARE EVERYDAY. COMMUNITY ADVOCATES ARE REGULARLY SEEKING THE MEANS AND RESOURCES TO PROVIDE SUPPORTIVE SERVICES TO FAMILIES LIVING WITH SICKLE CELL.

THE SICKLE CELL ASSOCIATION OF SAVANNAH MISSION IS TO OFFER A BEACON OF HOPE THROUGH THE SERVICES THAT ARE PROVIDED.

SCAS CONTINUE TO:

  • PROVIDE FUNDING FOR PEDIATRIC PATIENTS TO ATTEND CAMP NEW HOPE

  • FILL THE SICKLE CELL PANTRY WITH SNACKS WITH PATIENTS FOR EXTENDED VISITS ON INFUSION DAYS,

  • DELIVER BOOKS AND BLANKETS TO PEDIATRIC PATIENTS

  • OFFER SCHOLARSHIPS TO STUDENTS WHO WISH TO PURSUE HIGHER EDUCATION

  •  PARTNER WITH THE SICKLE CELL FOUNDATION OF GEORGIA FOR HEALTHCARE THROUGH A COMMUNITY HEALTH WORKER

  • PROVIDE RESOURCES TO INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES

WE WISH TO THANK ALL OF OUR SUPPORTERS, FAMILIES, AND FRIENDS THROUGHOUT THE NATION FOR WEARING RED AND SHARING THE WARMTH OF THEIR SMILES TO HELP US SHINE THE LIGHT ON SICKLE CELL FOR WORLD SICKLE CELL DAY 2024!

THE SICKLE CELL ASSOCIATION OF SAVANNAH IS DEDICATED TO CARRYING THE TORCH BECAUSE IT’S ALL ABOUT THE SICKLE CELL WARRIORS THROUGHOUT OUR CITY, STATE, COUNTRY, AND ALL OVER THE WORLD!!
